Lake Borgne Surge Barrier Modeling

Picture
Dynamic Solutions, LLC staff received a USACE Project Team Merit Award associated with our ADH hydrodynamic model of the Lake Borgne Surge Barrier developed for ERDC/CHL and the New Orleans District USACE Hurricane Protection Office. The Lake Borgne Surge Barrier protects New Orleans from storm surges originating from Breton Sound to the east. The Lake Borgne Surge Barrier model was created to simulate a variety of storm flow conditions and was validated to data collected during 2007. The effects of two different storm surge structure configurations were analyzed to determine navigation conditions and flow fields within the structure. The project was successfully completed under very aggressive schedule constraints. ADH was ideal for this application due to its ability to impose a pressure field on the free surface of the structure. This feature was utilized to simulate flow under the walls as well as simulate the effects of blockages within the structure. Barge traffic through the structure was simulated using the boat libraries within the ADH model software.
