EFDC
EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) is a general-purpose modeling package for simulating three-dimensional flow, transport, and biogeochemical processes in surface water systems including rivers, lakes, estuaries, reservoirs, wetlands, and near-shore to shelf-scale coastal regions. Dynamic Solutions, LLC has been a leading user of EFDC since 1996. The US EPA has continued to support development of EFDC and it is now part of a family of models recommended by them for Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) projects. In addition to hydrodynamic, salinity and temperature transport simulation capabilities, EFDC is also capable of simulating cohesive and non-cohesive sediment transport, near-field and far-field discharge dilution from multiple sources, the transport and fate of toxic contaminants in the water and sediment phases, and water quality kinetics including dissolved oxygen, organic carbon, algae and nutrients (i.e. eutrophication). Special enhancements to the hydrodynamics code, including vegetation resistance, wetting and drying, hydraulic structure representation, wave current boundary layer interaction, and wave-induced currents allow refined modeling of wetland and marsh systems, controlled-flow systems, and near-shore wave-induced currents and sediment transport. All of these elements are integrated computationally creating an efficiently, seamless tool to model hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and water quality.
